Aloha Justice Advocates!

I hope this finds you in good health and spirits!

This month we commemorate 40 years of the failed experiment known as the War on Drugs.

“President Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs on 14 Jul 1969 in a message to  Congress. It became the War on Drugs in Jun 1971. Hundreds of billions of dollars and 40 years later, drug consumption and profits are booming. In these desperate economic times in the United States, Washington could see better use for the billions of dollars spent on the drugs war and argue that it is not working…

…It costs the United States almost US $200 billion a year, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Include alcohol and tobacco-related costs along with health care, criminal justice and lost productivity and the figure exceeds US $500b annually.  The Office of National Drug Control Policy notes that over US $19b was spent on the war on drugs by the federal government in 2003 alone.”

Hawai`i has been a willing partner in the drug war and our jails and prisons, filled with nonviolent drug lawbreakers, are testament to that sad fact. Which has done more harm – drugs or the drug war, which has tattered the social fabric of Hawai`i and helped decimate the safety net for our most vulnerable community members?

CAPITOL ROTUNDA

4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Attached is a flyer for the event. I’m sending this post separately from the usual news because we really want to have a BIG turnout for the rally and sign waving. Isn’t it worth 2 hours of your time to question the government about the HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS going to fund the LARGEST UNEVALUATED government program ever?

EXERCISE YOUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS

LIFT YOUR VOICES FOR THOSE SILENCED BY INCARCERATION

NO MORE DRUG WAR.

Let me know if you can join us for this important event.

It’s about time. It’s about justice.  JUST US!

Have a great day!

“The number of drug offenders under age 18 admitted to prison for drug offenses increased twelvefold (from 70-840)
between 1985 to 1997. By 1997 drug offenders made up 11% of admissions among persons under 18 compared to 2% in 1985.”

Comments:

I wonder how many in attendance will be DEA,FBI and Homeland security agents whose sole purpose in life is job preservation. I can just see the briefing those agents receive before the rally, "Community Alliance on Prisons, Drug Policy Forum of Hawai`i and Life of the Land sound like terrorist organizations". "To get them to tell us their real agenda we may have to waterboard them."
