FOIA request filed to learn why TSA turned off scanners to quell Opt-Out Day protest

by Larry Geller

The public interest group Liberty Guard filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Transportation Security Administration Monday to determine why many airport imaging scanners were reportedly shut down and roped off on November 24th, the day of a planned "opt out protest."   [The Raw Story, Group probes TSA’s ‘manipulation’ of opt-out protests, 12/1/2010]

The article includes a link to the actual FOIA request filed, in case you’d like to see how these are done.

While the TSA may have turned off scanners on that one day, complaints to the ACLU indicate that the public protest continues.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) received over 900 complaints from travelers over the last month who've been subjected to the new screening procedures of the Transportation Security Agency.

"The TSA agent used her hands to feel under and between my breasts," said one woman. "She then rammed her hand up into my crotch until it jammed into my pubic bone."  [The Raw Story, Over 900 TSA complaints in Nov., ACLU says, 11/26/2010]

Another from the same article:

"Three or four TSA employees came over, basically surrounded me and very loudly proclaimed what a jerk I was for refusing the scan," he said. "The 'supervisor' then spent 15 minutes examining every part of my body - it was intrusive, humiliating and without a shadow of a doubt, intended to punish me for electing to not be irradiated."

And these are only the milder reports. On the web you can find incidents involving menstrual pads and much more.

Comments:

TSA workers seem to have more power to search a person than the police. If police randomly searched someone TSA style before they entered a bank there would be a lawsuit. I wonder if a TSA worker has ever rammed their hand up into a police officers crotch until it jammed into there pubic bone? Just wondering.
