Beach cleanups also monitor for radioactive tsunami debris

This comment posted by Kahi Pacarro to an older article (Forecasts of tsunami debris path across the Pacific Ocean, 6/9/2012) came in today, and is worth promoting so that more people will know about this North Shore effort.

The website linked in the comment has resources if you’d like to do your own beach cleanup.

We began collecting what looks like tsunami debris this past weekend in Kahuku. We scanned it with our Geiger and found no abnormal levels of radiation. The most likely item we found was a refrigerator with Japanese writing in it and little decay. It scanned normal.

Well, the way refrigerators are made today, I doubt one purchased here could make it back to Japan in good condition.
