Malia Zimmerman records an hour interview with Mordechai Orion

by Larry Geller

It’s quite an experience to be able to spend an hour with Mordechai Orion, the principal defendant in what has been described as the largest human trafficking case in US history. That’s the gift that Malia Zimmerman has brought to all of those who are following this case.

Orion is CEO of Global Horizons, a company also facing civil charges by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of allegedly trafficked Thai workers.

For background on the cases, see recent stories on the Hawaii Reporter website.

In the video below, Orion responds in a fully relaxed manner, even eagerly, to Zimmerman’s questions about himself and the case.

While other reporters covering this story wrote that their phone calls were not returned, Zimmerman persisted. She brings us an hour with a man who will be in the spotlight not only in Hawaii but nationally and internationally.

Comments:

Why isn't he in jail?

Orion was in pre-trial detention in jail for a time, waiting for space at a halfway house in Iwilei. There is a presumption of fair bail in these cases, and when the space never opened up, he was released with GPS monitoring to the custody of the Chabad Rabbi. The location is -- the Ala Moana Hotel, where they have offices.

The trial is scheduled to begin next year. It will be a complex case. If convicted, and if he doesn't somehow get himself deported, he will probably end up in jail. Please keep in mind that it's not just this one guy. There are eight defendants. There is another case, expected to go to trial this month, that is related. The Aloun Farms case is expected to last several weeks.
