Must see: Daily Show Thursday 12/16

by Larry Geller

Congress has passed a tax reduction for the richest Americans. It’s not clear that they will pass legislation to provide medical care to 9/11 first responders. Why? One of them said it would be disrespectful for Congress to work between the two holidays of Christmas and New Years.

A first responder pointed out on tonight’s Daily Show that “You won’t find a single New York firefighter who considers it a sign of disrespect to work in a New York City firehouse on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.”

Daily ShowJust see this program somehow. It should be on the Comedy Central website soon. See the first two segments at least. The first is about Congress-Worst Responders, and the second part is an interview with a group of first responders, each gravely ill and not getting support.

Then call your Congresspeople and get them to stay and do the right thing. You can tell them what that is, since they seem unable to figure it out for themselves.

Ok, Comedy Central allows embedding, so here are the two segments of Thursday's Daily Show.  Click the little thingy in the lower right for full screen viewing.

Thank you, Larry. That is powerful stuff.

I had seen the "Worst Responders" segment, but missed the First Responders panel. It made me tear up. I love NYC.

But there are a lot of schmucks in D.C.

I hope the holidays find you and yours in a warm, comfortable place, sheltered against the harsh world being created around us.

Mahalo for what you do.

Thank you Kolea, and thank you also for all you do. Best wishes for the holidays. And then comes 2011...

The first time this bill was voted on a few months ago Representative Charles Djou voted against this measure because the bill was to be paid for by closing a tax loophole used by foreign companies incorporated in off-shore tax havens to avoid taxes on income earned in the United States. Djou is one of the schmucks Kolea is referring to.

I'll probably catch some flak for this, but after more than 20 years as a journalist I've yet to find a more effective interviewer than Jon Stewart. He usually has time for only a half-dozen questions or less, yet repeatedly gets to the meat of often complicated issues – with wit, clarity, and perspective. Woe to the interviewee who arrives ill-prepared with facts or sense of humor.

Dave, thank you for pointing that out. I fully agree. He also provides a welcome contrast to other TV interviews which avoid lobbing even softballs, much less explore an issue fully. I'm also amazed that some of his guests are willing to go on his show, but I guess they have to sell their books. He's respectful but very to the point, and he asks questions that I'm sure his viewers want to hear about.

Thanks for your comment.

Larry, thanks for sharing this particular segment of the Daily Show. My daughter and I watched it, and by the end were were cheering on Jon Stewart -- wow! He can really break it down.
