Cronkite announces death of JFK 47 years ago today

by Larry Geller

We used to ask, “Do you remember where you were when you heard that JFK was assassinated?”

I was window shopping around Cortland St., Manhattan, and saw crowds in front of store windows where TV sets had been set up.

These days, I have to explain who “JFK” was.

47 years ago I was living in Germany, when the announcement was made on the Armed Forces Network. Stunned, I thought who is Lyndon Johnson who became President?

I asked a couple of younger people today if they knew it was the anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination, and of the four, three did not really know anything about him. The fourth did. 20-somethings.

I was 14 at the time and didn't care one way or the other.
