Help a non-profit today with your phone calls

by Larry Geller

Got a few minutes? Do an organization you may be a member of a big favor. Let them know they need to do something simple to save their tax-exempt status, but they need to do it really soon!

Skim through the Exempt Organizations At-Risk of Revocation – Hawaii list yourself. When you find an organization that still hasn’t figured out they need to fill out a simple electronic postcard application to keep their tax-free status, call them up and let them know!

What should they do? They can call the IRS, or go to their web page.

They’ve got till Friday to do this. There have been several articles in the newspapers including one in today’s Star-Advertiser.

If you’re reading this from outside Hawaii, find your state in this listing and check out your neighborhood non-profits. Do them a favor with a phone call alerting them to their situation.

I was surprised to see lots of Friends of the Library organizations still on the list. Even famous groups like the Save Sunset Beach Coalition, Nuuanu Aikido Club, the ILWU, the Honolulu Boy Choir, Hawaii Lighthouse for the Blind, the YWCA near the University of Hawaii, and many, many more. There are PTAs and other school groups on the list also.

I probably shouldn’t mention that Honolulu Infragard is also on the list.

The deadline has already been extended but there are 54 pages of fine-print listings of organizations that still have not taken action.

So if  you’re a member, or share their objectives, how about giving them a call today.
