Hawaii female judges fleeing into retirement? Why?

by Larry Geller

If one female judge in Hawaii were retiring, it would hardly be worth a comment. If two announce retirement, a bit of a concern. When three announce retirement, it’s “What’s going on here???”

Well, it’s not three, it’s six already. Shouldn’t we be asking “HEY—WHAT’S GOING ON HERE??” in capital letters?

Today’s article in the Honolulu Advertiser (Hifo, Hirai to step down, 12/22/2009) counts six female judges and only two male judges retiring, one already retired and Judge Moon, who has reached the mandatory retirement age. The article mentions five female justices retiring but then gives six names.

Good report, but why indeed is this happening?

Inquiring minds want to know.
