Joan Conrow awarded 2009 Travel Writer of the Year by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association

The Hawaii Ecotourism Association will recognize Joan Conrow, who (among other things) writes the popular KauaiEclectic blog, long an absolute must on my daily blog reading circuit. She will be given their Travel Writer of the Year award at a luncheon on Friday May 15th, 2009 from 12 p.m. –1 p.m. at the The Tamarind Room, Ohelo Building at Kapiolani Community College. Information on the program is scarce (see these event details and registration info on their website), but a separate email had more background:
Ms. Conrow has written on environmental, cultural, social issues and ecotourism for more than 21 years.
HEA member Dr. Carl Berg Jr., Hawaiian Wildlife Tours located on Kauai, nominated Joan Conrow for the Hawai`i Ecotourism Association's award because "She has always emphasized responsible tourism in her travel books and articles and strives to include information about native species, respect for cultural sites, and the environmental and cultural attributes that make Hawai`i unique."
The keynote speaker will be Laura Thielen of DLNR.
Joan’s blog reveals a lot about her wonderful respect and appreciation for nature. She on a first-name basis with the fauna and flora of her island, raises taro, and speaks regularly with her neighbors. And she writes almost daily about it. If I ever should meet her friend Andy, or farmer Jerry, they will be amazed at what the world knows about them, through Joan’s writing [uh, Joan, these are real people, right??].
